# File Manager

> How to manage, edit, upload, and extract ZIP archives directly in Pterodactyl

The **Files** menu allows you to manage files, edit configuration files, and extract ZIP archives directly in your browser without requiring external software.

### 1. Editing Files (e.g. `.env` or `config.json`)

1. Open the **Files** tab on your server panel.
2. Click on the file you want to edit (e.g. `.env` or `index.js`).
3. Make your changes in the built-in web code editor.
4. Click **Save Content** in the bottom-right corner.
5. Head to the **Console** tab and click **Restart** to apply your changes.

### 2. Creating New Files or Folders

* **Create a File**: Click **New File**, write or paste your code, enter the file name at the bottom, and click **Save Content**.
* **Create a Directory**: Click **Create Directory**, type the folder name, and click **Create**.

### 3. Extracting ZIP Archives (Unarchive)

To deploy multi-file projects quickly:

1. Compress your project files into a single `.zip` file on your computer (exclude `node_modules`).
2. Upload the `.zip` file in the **Files** menu.
3. Click the three dots menu (**⋮**) next to the `.zip` file.
4. Select **Unarchive**. The files will extract automatically in seconds.

### 4. Uploading & Downloading Files

* **Upload**: Drag and drop files from your computer into the Files tab, or click the **Upload** button.
* **Download**: Click the three dots menu (**⋮**) next to any file and click **Download**.

## ⚠️ Important Best Practices

* **Never upload `node_modules`**: Uploading thousands of small files takes excessive time and may lead to OS architecture mismatches. Only upload `package.json`, and the server will install dependencies automatically upon startup.
* **Check storage limits**: Ensure your disk usage is below 100%, as full disks prevent new files from being saved.
